One primary tenet of chiropractic is that the body’s resources are utilized to heal itself. Sleep is thought of by many to be a restorative process during which we heal the mind and body. It is common knowledge that we often sleep better after regular adjustment of the spine. When our spinal column is in proper alignment, our nervous system is happy and all of its resources are available to make us well.

I hope the following suggestions will help you have a great night’s rest:

  • Calm the mind with deep breathing and imagery of a relaxing place
  • Meditation can set a wonderful state of calmness to prepare for sleep
  • Take a warm bath, not too hot, just above body temperature
  • Drink a warm beverage such as herbal or decaffeinated tea
  • Dim lighting and soothing music may help relax you
  • Light reading, nothing too involved

Here in Santa Barbara, it’s easy to find things that (hopefully) will relax you.  A stroll by the Santa Barbara Mission, yoga classes at various studios, a small book from the library, the possibilities are endless!

Whatever you decide to do, here are somethings to avoid before sleep:

  • Alcohol, it inhibits the REM stage of sleep
  • Caffeinated drinks, of course caffeine isn’t a sleep aid
  • Heavy meals, they tend to require more energy to digest
  • Sleep aids.  If you frequently take sleep aids, you’ll be more and more dependent on them every night

Your posture in bed is as important as it is standing.  Avoid sleeping on your stomach.  Also, don’t sleep on a mattress just because it’s soft. Mattress firmness is unique to everyone.  A firmer mattress may support you better.

Regular chiropractic may also help keep your spine aligned while sleeping.  Call today to see if chiropractic care is right for you.
